It was dead at work, not that I’m complaining. There was a heat advisory for heat indexes over 100. I had 14 days PTO left. At 9AM, I decided to ask for the rest of the day off (I go in at 6AM) so I could get my ride in before it got too hot. It was already 85.
I did ride over closer to Hoover Dam to get some rollers. It was a great ride with one exception, which I will explain in a moment. Cloudy, and it was getting breezy. I’m glad I went out when I did. At this moment, it is miserable outside. 89 degrees, humidity55%, dewpoint 75, heat index 95, winds from the south at 17 gusting to 25.
So what happened? Why did I get the shit scarred out of me. I was heading north on Harlem Rd, and was approaching the stop sign at Gorsuch Rd (see map below). I had a stop sign. Eastbound traffic has a stop sign, westbound has the right of way with no stop sign. I was observing the law ( as I always do…really). I could see traffing coming from both directions on Gorsuch. Eastbound car came to the stop first, I was next. I stopped, my foot was out of the pedal, on the pavement. On the white line, about two feet from the center line.
The westbound car made a left turn onto Harlem. No signal, of course. Going well above the speed limit. He made the turn INTO THE SAME LANE I was in, to my right. I saw what was happening, and if I had not some reaction of trying to get out of the way, I would have been sprawled across the hood and windshield, with a minimal of a broke leg. I cussed and screamed at the top of my voice. There were some guys working on a house at the intersection who saw it, which could have been something of a salvation. Because the car didnt even slow down, which makes me think I would have been a hit and run.
When I was in Albuquerque, I was hit twice, the last time was in 1993. I moved to San Antonio, never even came close. This was close. I know I came within six inches, max, of being a hood ornament.
