It was ugly, but I think I can say, if it had not been for me, it would have been brutal ugly.
It’s kind of hard for a goalie to say “you really did play a good game” after a 7-2 loss, but I do feel that way. OK, so I may have not been stellar, giving up a few soft ones, but I can say that was near the end of the game, when the outcome of the game had been decided long before.
I really didn’t know what to expect from our opponents. I was optimistic based on their record and their previous opponents. I certainly didn’t expect the rout we faced.
The first few minutes looked good for us. Either the other team couldn’t find their legs, or we only had our legs for a few minutes. I suspect it was the later. We took an early 2-0 lead. Maybe we became over optimistic, but after that, it was if the rest of the team was playing with their skate guards on their blades.
I felt I played an outstanding first and second period. I made some KEY saves, but my defense was languishing back in the neutral zone as I was facing breakaways, 2 on 0, 3 on 1’s, or the other team all parked in front of my net. I faced way too many shots for a D South game (47). The other goalie, she played a good game, But her defense was as solid as I have ever seen, and may have seen 20 shots, probably less. If fact their entire team played an outstanding, error free game. They played their positions as well as any team I have ever seen.
By the end of the second period, and into the third, I was even more hapless,. I was cooked, I was seeing more screens than a HUD project. There was no way I could see through all those legs.
It was the first time I ever had to shake my head, in disbelief, at my team. Only slightly, not to call attention to myself!
My best stand.. while they were playig Propellerheads “History Repeating” on an adjacent rink.
It wasn’t as ugly as it could have been. And I am not ashamed of the way I played.
And it was a fun game as well. I really did feel I was on top of the game. Definitely the best game I played since coming back. Positioning was much better, kept the stick on the ice, and played out further.
