At least D League South Giant Killers.
Last night, we defeated the first place, undefeated team by a score of 6-5. I say “we” because it was the best game the entire team has played this session. And definitely the best game I’ve had this session. In fact, the best game I’ve had in some time.
I had some D for the entire game, which was a first. There were some lapses, as indicated by the score. Two goals, I would like to take back. It was all me, out of position. The others came on a wraparound, and two breakaways, and a one timer. But I did not see as many shots as I had expected, and made KEY saves when needed, mostly in traffic. I feel I also came thru in a big way in the final seconds making a save preventing us from going into overtime. Also screening was not an issue. After the game, I was complimented on how I wasn’t given them anything to shoot at, and that is something I have really been trying to work on.
I played with Worthington for one session, and they are a great bunch of guys. I actually left them with regrets, but it was when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s and at a point where my life change began. They were all, for the most part, supportive and appreciative. But it’s always fun to get a win against a former team.
I went into the game optimistic. I have a good record against former teams, and I also had confidence in the team. I really wanted this one, for myself, and the team. And what a story, last place bottom feeders
The captain came in and said he overheard some of our opponents talking about how this was going to be an easy game, and supposedly someone referred to it as a being a “boring game”. I think that got us all fired up and primed to take ‘em down a notch. Since this is D South, they should never take any team for granted, even the bottom feeders. (Guess they know now!)
I made two key saves (saves that I probably shouldn’t have made) very early, and that got me in the game and focused. And I think it helped spark the team. By midway thru the 1st period we were up 4-0. Worthington looked stunned, and pissed. On the other hand, we ended the period psyched and upbeat. At the end of the first we were up 4-1.
The game started getting a bit chippy in the 2nd. It also had to be the longest period of adult rec league hockey I have ever played. Penalties abounded, and the ref were spending too much time sorting thru them all. Actually I was surprised there were not more penalties the way the mouths were running. And it was very frustrating for me. Seems every time I made a key save, here I was standing around, trying to stay focused. But it was a good period for me, and made my best saves during the period, including a barrage as the clock was ticking down at the end of the period. At the end of the second we were up 5-3.
The 3rd wasn’t as chippy, but it was a very competitive. We scored early to take a 6-3 lead, but Worthington came back and scored two quick unanswered goals, one from a one time, and the other one on a shot from the top of the circle, which I should have had. The last few minutes were really intense. Worthington called a time out, which may have been good for me, since I felt I saved the best for last to preserve the win.
It was sweet! And I win the team really deserved. I was extremely pleased with my game and appreciate the acknowledgment from my team, and my opponents.
