The winter session started last night. Nights Owls against the Flying A’s. Night Owls took the win, 8-6.
I have to admit I went into the game nervous. New team, new league. But, I also felt the move up was good for me. I was confident that I was ready to make the move as I feel I can play better at a higher level.
I feel really good about my game, though there was a bit of a lapse late. More on that later. And I actually have some defense, and in last night’s case, very good defense. Clearing the pucks, few screens. few odd man rushes.
We were ahead 2-0 at the end of the first. I gave up my first goal late in the first, on a breakaway. (Didn’t see too many of those, for a change) As the second period started, I gave up a second goal. The one time I screened. Actually I had a piece of it with my stick. I gave up another in the second. It was a weird deflection off my shoulder.
We were on a roll in the second. I really didn’t see much action on my end. Which, for my, is always scary. I need something to keep my in the game. We were up something like 5-3. maybe 6-3, at the end of the second.
Things changed in the third, and the A’s kicked it up a notch. Which was a wake up for me. What really hurt me was my defense really let down for just a few minutes late in the third. I had become too dependent on what had been my stellar defense. My game went down, and the other team noticed and took advantage of it. I have up three goals quick and late in the period, but I held on, making some good saves to preserve the win.
I didn’t see as many shots as I expected. It was a win, albeit it an ugly win. But it was fun, and a it was a good way to get the session started.
