I have made mention of the approaching state time trial. It will be held on Sunday, June 22 in the Groveport area. Not flat, some rollers, but should be a good course. As of this morning, there have been 25 riders to register, and most of them are in my category, Masters, although I have no ideal how many are in the 50-55 age group. Start times are based on the order of registration (juniors first), and I was number four or five to register, so that should give me a great start time, especially if the weather trend continues as it has been, meaning winds increasing thru the morning.
Time trialing is my preference. There’s just isn’t enough of them. My best time was back in the early 90’s when I cranked out a 58 something on the Moriarity course. My last tt was in 1997 (states in Texas). I don’t remember the time, but I do remember it was the best effort I ever had on a miserably humid and windy day!
Needless to say, I’m really looking forward to the event. I do wish I had trained harder. As always. I really have no ideal what to expect for times. I’m going to shoot for an hour. But for me, all I want to do is come away from there knowing I did the best I could, that I pushed my body as hard as I could on that day.
I do need to get the aero bars on the bike, and I need to get out there and ride the course. That will be my goal this weekend.
Here’s the deal. I don’t ride a fancy bike. I’ll be riding a Mavic Cosmic on the front, Mavic Aksium on the rear. No lightweight. I’m still a budget racer, although I do have more disposable income than in the past. And if gas was not approaching 4.00 a gallon, I probably would have dropped money for lighter, more aero wheels.
My only aero advantage will be my aero bars, Garneu Rocket helmet, skinsuit and lycra shoe covers. Comes to about 1500.00, give or take That’s what some people would have paid for their wheels, to go on their 2000 buck plus bikes. I figure $1500 machine against $3000 + machine. Oh, if I had the resources, and most importantly, if I could justify spending that much money, I would! But I don’t and I can’t.
So, yes, the odds are against me. But I’m not out to win (although it would be nice to medal). I’m not going to break any records either. As I mentioned earlier, it all for me. I’m not out to impress anyone!
Besides, it’s not the machine…it’s the motor. Spending bundles of money on a bike is nice, but if you ain’t got the legs, what did spending that money do for you!? It might make you look good. But, I would really like to see the expression of their face as I wizz by them on my Fuji clunker!
